About The Salvation Army in Denmark
The Salvation Army is an international Christian church and charity that operates in more than 130 countries. We are an integral part of the universal Christian church. Our faith is rooted in the Bible and is expressed in extensive social work. Both spiritual and social needs are met without discrimination.
Our story began in the slums of East London, where in 1865 William and Catherine Booth preached the gospel among the people of the streets, the poor and the marginalized. The work was first known as The Christian Mission, but in 1878 it changed its name to The Salvation Army and took shape on the military model. With the military metaphor and terminology, the members became soldiers and the pastors became officers – and soon after that the movement spread to other countries.
A holistic approach to the gospel with care for the whole person is central to The Salvation Army's work, which is catchy expressed through the slogan 'Soup, soap, salvation'.
In 1887, The Salvation Army thus came to Denmark, as the 20th country the Army ‘conquered’. From here, the Salvation Army was established in Greenland in 2013 as the 125th country, where the Army officially operates.
A holistic approach to the gospel with care for the whole person is central to The Salvation Army’s work, which is catchily expressed through the slogan ‘Soup, soap, salvation’. The social and spiritual work takes place in unity, and both physical and spiritual needs must be met. An effort that is just as relevant today as it was 160 years ago.
In Denmark and Greenland, we serve daily meals to the socially vulnerable, provide shelter to the homeless, support families in crisis, reach out to the lonely and isolated, and help people who are struggling with addiction or mental illness.
Throughout the country, people find meaningful and life-changing fellowship in our local churches (called corps), where there is plenty of opportunities for personal involvement. The same goes for the many people who find and support us through our second-hand shops.
A large part of our work is done by volunteers. An effort that is appreciated, regardless of whether it takes place in a second-hand shop, a drop-in centre, at a camp or in the form of a counselling service. If you would like to get involved, we would love to hear from you.
Both socially and spiritually, there is still much to fight for – and against.

Across the country, 160,000 people each year find new hope and help through The Salvation Army’s local corps, communities, drop-in centres, shelters and crisis centres, just as thousands of vulnerable families across the country receive holiday and Christmas help.
