Step by Step
In Step by Step we support people ready to take their first steps in getting out of poverty, and often in finding a way out of life on the street.
We have helped over 110 people get into jobs, over the first 18 months.
We have space for up to 20 people at a time to sleep at our night shelter.
Our guests have access to our daily drop-in at Pakhuset where you can get free food and guidance.
We offer specific job advice and guidance to help with the different registration and job seeking processes
Participants can attend short, work-related courses that will improve people’s chances for finding a job.
We draw on a great network of partners to help our guests with health issues, fellowship, advice giving, and much more.
- Most of our participants come from EU countries or have an EU passport, and can speak some English.
Shelter First
The first key to getting off the street and into a job is a place to stay. Often there are a limited number of places available at emergency night shelters and only in the winter. People must queue up every night to see if there is space. At Step by Step, we offer our guests a bed for a period, helping them to establish good routines and to be well rested and refreshed in the morning, ready for work. Guests also have access to showers and a hot meal in the evening, as well as a simple breakfast in the morning. Our social workers provide support to help our guests to adjust and settle into Danish life and culture.
Guidance
The Danish system is quite complicated and there are lots of rules. It is easy to get confused, making it easy to lose valuable time and energy. Our job consultants guide our guests through the system, helping them to navigate registration processes, opening a bank account and setting up MitID, all of which are crucial steps for jobseekers in Denmark.
Taking a step by step approach, we show our guests how to navigate each stage of this system, so they are better prepared to do it on their own in the future.
Among other things, our guests learn how to write a CV and cover letter, to use Jobindex and other job seeking platforms, and to apply for an administrative CPR number. We support all our guests so they can learn how to navigate this system and are able to do it on their own in the future. At Step by Step, we aim to empower our guests with the necessary knowledge and skills to become independent and better prepared to navigate life in Denmark in the future.
Drop-in
Pakhuset is not just a nice place to stay during the day, it is also a place where guests can come and get a free hot and/or cold meal. It is also possible to take a hot shower. The staff are always happy to assist the job consultants at Step by Step, with guidance and support, throughout the job seeking process
